Eastoft Hemp Harvest in Pictures

The hemp fields were the biggest acreage grown on one farm in the UK

48 Acres in total

The hemp was grown by Garthorpe Farming Company after

Police and Home Office checks and appropriate licensing.

I believe they were grown on contract to Hemp Technology limited www.hemcore.co.uk

The fields yielded 253 bales approx 75 tonnes of raw hemp fibre

Hemp yields are amongst the highest of any crop.

The hemp crop requires no herbicides or pesticides.

No part of the plant is wasted.

Hemp fibres are tough, durable and incredibly versatile.

Communitas UK are providing free mobile IT learning drop in sessions, for groups of ten people,

to be held in the village hall on a Friday afternoon (dates to be arranged).

THERE ARE 8 PLACES LEFT !

The unit comes with 10 laptops, printer, internet connection and a qualified IT tutor.

The tutor is happy to tailor the sessions to meet the needs of the people who are interested in attending the sessions.

There are also more structured courses.

Intruders in Eastoft

Thursday 15th Sept, around 3am, two men (around 5ft 10, mid twenties) were seen in the back garden of the school cottage (in front of school).

When the house lights came on, they ran out and drove off in a large black estate car.

The incident has been reported to Goole Police.

So stay vigilant, make sure all outbuildings are secure and don't leave anything valuable lying around (obviously).

You may want to have Police number by phone, just in case !

It's at 10.30am and there will be a cup of tea and a biscuit afterwards.

The theme will be 'Sharing' and the worship is being led by members of the various churches in the Marshland parish who have worked really hard to put together what we hope is an enjoyable service.

It would be lovely to see a good response from Eastoft as a sign of support in what will be the first of a number of laity led services in the parish.

Playground Spring Clean - Part 2 !

Last Saturday we made a start on sorting out the playground - well done to Alex Hall for volunteering to help and putting two hours in !

This Saturday we are again asking for volunteers to help

- 10.00am to 12 noon

- Why not help for half an hour ?

- Every little helps as well as being a boost for the

usual volunteers !

- If your kids use the playground, bring them along

- They can help too !

Speed Limit Review

NLC are in the middle of a Speed Limit Review, required by Department for Transport circular 01/2006.

They have collected and assessed data for the whole region and are recommending a speed limit of 30 mph for Eastoft (see NLC map below).

They are now in the middle of a 4 week consultation period with Town and Parish Councils (email me if you want a copy of consultation docs).

Proposed Changes to Speed Limits

Then there will be a consultation with neighbouring authorities, emergency services, road haulage association, bus companies, disability groups etc.
Then follows an assessment of feedback.

Following all this consultation, there will be a report to Cabinet Member outlining proposals and seeking approval to formally progress implementation of review findings – expected time May/June 2011
Then NLC will prioritise implementation measures and formally advertise Traffic Regulation Orders.
Finally NLC will begin implementation with phased introduction of measures.

SSE Acquisition of RES Keadby wind farm project

SSE (Scottish and Southern Energy plc) has reached agreement on the acquisition of a wind farm close to SSE’s existing Keadby power station in North Lincolnshire, from Renewable Energy Systems Group (RES).
The Keadby Wind Farm was developed by RES Group and the 34 turbine project received planning consent in 2008. Once constructed, the project will have an installed capacity of between 68 and 85MW and provide enough clean, green energy to power the equivalent of between 38,000 and 47,000 UK homes

Keadby wind farm is the largest consented wind farm in England and will be SSE’s first consented wind farm in the country.

Subject to a final investment decision, SSE expects to begin construction of the wind farm in late 2011 with an expected project completion date of early 2014.

The acquisition of Keadby supports the scale and composition of SSE’s investment programme to 2015.

In its six-month financial report in November 2010, SSE said it was continuing the process of optimising its wind farm portfolio with both disposals and acquisitions. In line with this, in April 2011, SSE disposed of its equity interest in three operating wind farms in Scotland and Northern Ireland, totalling 96.8MW.

Gregor Alexander, Finance Director of SSE, said:

“We have said that we will pursue both acquisitions and disposals in order to optimise our wind farm portfolio in the UK, and this acquisition of Keadby wind farm, which is SSE’s first consented wind farm in England, is completely in line with that objective. It adds to the diversity of our wind portfolio and the site’s proximity to our existing power station helps make this an appealing project to take forward to construction.

”As an established generator in the area, we have a long-standing commitment to the local community around Keadby, which will only be strengthened by this deal.”

Clerk has received notice from North Lincolnshire Council of the Unitary Authority & Parish Council elections and referendum on Thursday 5 May 2011.
The relevant publications are on the village noticeboard and nomination papers were given to  parish councillors who wish to stand again these are to be returned no later than Monday 4 April by noon.
Nomination papers are available from the Clerk or North Lincolnshire Council at Pittwood House Scunthorpe. The  Notice of poll will be on 21 April 2011.

Minutes of the last Parish council meeting raised the following points and issues:
Dog Fouling in the village has improved and North Lincolnshire Council now have Bluetooth devices in their efforts to improve dog fouling!
The garages in the village owned by North Lincolnshire Homes are to be demolished in April.
Any queries which Eastoft parishioners have re footpaths have to contact North Lincolnshire council Highways department at Church Square House Scunthorpe.
The parish councillors intend having a volunteer tidy day on the village green and pond site and assess the benches, trees (which are protected) and the issue of cars driving on these areas.

The next meeting of the Parish Council is
9th May 2011 at 8 o’clock preceded by the annual parish meeting & public forum at 7.30pm

At last, after all we've been put through, and if they keep their promises, it looks as though we have succeeded in keeping RES traffic out of the villages.

RES now say "Some traffic will need to come through Keadby to enable the bridge to be built, less than 250 vehicles over 8 months" but "No wind farm traffic will go through any other villages".

Also "All main and sub-contracting companies involved will be monitored to ensure they follow the correct routes and do not use other 'shortcuts'."

"Routes will be clearly defined in all sub-contracts and clearly signposted for all drivers to see."

And "Any contractor found to be not adhering to the relevant route guidance will be disciplined under the wind farms disciplinary procedures."

And again "The bridge access route will be the sole access to the site for wind farm related traffic. No wind farm construction or maintenance vehicles of any size will go through Ealand, Eastoft or Crowle."

More ambiguously and worryingly they state "The access route will be strictly enforced unless further notification is given."

We asked if there would be a northern site entrance - they said no.

We asked what they intend if their route was blocked - they said they would suspend deliveries for the duration of the blockage.

We asked about the " wind farms disciplinary procedures" they said it "depends on the contracts" but typically "two strikes and dismissal".

They said "Every effort will be taken to consult with the community on local events that proposed deliveries may coincide with."

We pointed out their deliveries will always coincide with local events because people are trying to get to work and go about their business !

We asked about notice of delivery days for abnormal loads (34 convoys of 9 low loaders) they said they would leaflet the villages 4 weeks before and put articles in local press.

It looks as though RES have taken all our concerns on board - except one !

There is absolutely no mention of the canal, nothing about any delivery of any kind by water, no sign of the responsible green option !

RES say that abnormals delivered by road is the "lowest impact solution" !

They say to construct a wharf as well as a bridge would require extra vehicles going through Keadby.

They say the interests of Keadby residents, who were concerned this morning about vehicles through their village, outweighs the gains of having tens of thousands of HGV deliveries taken by water !!

They say a balance has to be struck between the interests of Keadby residents and the environment !!!

They say the feasibility study (commissioned by RES) by the Commercial Boat Operaters Association does not prove all deliveries can be made by canal and "their own research" shows "remaining concerns".

They said Government grants to make up any difference in cost between road and water would not be available to them.

There are many responses that can be made to these statements:

1. No method of road delivery can be a lower impact solution on the environment compared to water (if it's deliverable). It could be on cost/profit margins perhaps.

2. Construct the wharf first then build the bridge via the canal !

3. 250 vehicles over 8 months averages (very roughly) at 1 per day !

RES refused to say how many vehicles it would take to build a wharf - despite being pressed several times they would not even give an estimate figure or range !

If it takes 250 vehicles to build a bridge over 3 natural obstacles and a railway, surely it won't take any more to build a suitable wharf ?

(We are consulting Waterways experts for an estimate).

Are RES seriously suggesting that one plus one more delivery per day through Keadby outweighs the gains to the whole region's environment ??

Or even two - 500 extra deliveries (over 12 months = 1.5 per day ?!) - to help save the planet !

In fact, we suspect a suitable wharf would take less deliveries than the bridge !

(If it comes down to it, as far as the SEC is concerned that is, they can bring their wharf deliveries through Eastoft if it means building England's biggest onshore properly !)

4. We believe that if the people of Keady were properly given both the arguments and the numbers, they would be in favour of a small extra sacrifice to help theirs and everybodys environment - if indeed any extra noticeable sacrifice needs to be made !

5. RES say they can't go by water because they have consulted with the people of Keadby this morning and must respect residents concerns about any more vehicles through their village - BUT RES HAD ALREADY ARRIVED AT KEADBY WITH A PLAN THAT MAKES NO MENTION OF WATER !!

Did the residents of Keadby get any chance to weigh up the pros and cons of the wharf option ?

As it happens, RES themselves quote Arthur Wills, Chair of Keadby with Althorpe Parish Council, being "pleased to have the opportunity to be part of this historic project" !!! (exhibition leaflet)

It is clear RES are hiding behind their concern for the people of Keadby ( a little breathtaking to say the least , after all they've thrown at local communities !) so it boils down to the feasibility (cost ?) and environmental issues.

6. The CBOA study, British Waterways, the recent Medge Hall railway upgrade, all say the canal is feasible for deliveries, but especially for the tens of thousands of HGVs worth of aggregates.

And the cost ? Helen Wilson (new project manager) said that building a wharf and using canal (so it is feasible ?) would tend towards making their project not profitable enough !

But what if it does mean a bit less profit ? Saving the environment cannot be accomplished by ignoring the environment to keep costs down/profits up !

The environment is suffering precisely because companies keep on expecting/demanding the same old profit margins that have caused the problem !

Saving the environment is about responsible, (even award winning) green companies leading the way, helping to revitalise the waterways and promote green options.

And let's not forget the renewable energy certificates RES can trade on the gambling exchanges - another taxpayer subsidy - AND they already have the benefit of a very cheap grid connection - the main reason they chose our area (it has become more apparent with the 27% performance on the hill at Normanby that it isn't the wind !).

Either companies take on green issues and costs or we have had it !!!

A functioning canal running through a truly massive building project is a perfect opportunity - if green is not on the table for this, when will it ever be ?

RES say their TMP will be submitted in March (we asked for notification when the TMP is submitted and a copy to us, the project manager said yes).

We need to make sure NLC planning, Councillors and RES take feasibility, regional and national environmental policy and environment issues seriously - there is no excuse for not using these waterways !

It looks like we all need to give one final push on behalf of the planet and future generations to make sure the job is done properly !

RES is very pleased to announce that, after a great deal of work and with the support of local politicians, we have now received planning permission to build the North Pilfrey Bridge on the site of the incomplete Pilfrey Bridge.

This enables all traffic for the wind farm to come straight off the A18.

The only exception to this will be the small amount of traffic which will need to come through Keadby to facilitate the construction of the bridge itself - we expect this to be approximately 250 vehicle movements over the predicted 8-month construction period.

We will shortly be submitting a planning application to make minor amendments to the tracks on site, which will take account of the new access route from the A18.

The North Pilfrey Bridge access route will be the sole access to the site for wind farm-related traffic.

RES Exhibition Planned for Tuesday 22nd February with no prior notice to Community

RES have decided to go ahead and hold an 'exhibition' in Eastoft instead of answering the questions and concerns the Save Eastoft Campaign have previously registered with them (see below).

RES say the new Traffic Management Plan will be ready by next week and this will be featured at their exhibition, which is at the River Don Tavern on Tuesday 22nd February, 2pm to 9pm.

It seems they have no desire to consult with our campaign and prefer to attempt to bypass SEC !

We have requested they send us a copy of the TMP as soon as it is ready but we will not be holding our breath !

If you decide to go to the exhibition, please bear in mind the questions and concerns already submitted to them (again see below). SEC will put out a statement on the RES exhibition/new TMP as soon as possible.

With regard to your offer of further consultation, we have canvassed local villages and the general feeling is that a further exhibition here is not necessary.

We welcome the bridge, it's what we have argued for all along, particularly for Ealand's sake !

The whole point of the bridge is that there should be no traffic at all coming through Eastoft, Swinefleet, Crowle and Ealand save in life-threatening emergency !

We understand from our friends in the CBOA that talks are progressing with regard to using the canal and that RES now appear to be taking this essential option seriously.

As 'trustees' of our local environment and responsible citizens of the planet (and in line with national and regional environmental policy) we have always insisted that having a canal running through your site and not using it is nothing short of criminal in the present world climate.

We want as much traffic as possible, if not everything, to go by water !

We have some outstanding concerns with regard to the TMP you still have to submit and have approved:

1) The recommendations of the Public Inquiry and the Secretary of State's recommendations which followed insist no traffic over 3 tonnes should go through our villages "to protect local amenity".

Except in life-threatening emergency we insist no traffic at all (eg workers, suppliers of non-bulk items) should use the Swinefleet or Crowle to Eastoft/Washinghall Lane route.

To this end we see no need for a site entrance on the northern boundary (save perhaps for the need of an emergency exit/entrance).

We expect RES to agree to this as acknowledgement of what your company has put local people through for the past two years.

The absence of a northern site entrance will help guarantee against any driver/worker/contractor attempting any short cuts - ALL traffic must go via M18-M180-A18 and onto site via the southern entrance on the A18.

2) We want to see what contingency plans RES intend to submit with regard to possible closure of motorways and A18 for any length of time (for example due to road accident or extreme weather).

Will RES suspend traffic for the duration of the problem ?

If not, what alternative routes will you be proposing ?

3) We want to see some form of procedure put in place in the event traffic is still coming through villages i.e. contractors taking un-approved, unsafe short-cuts !

What safeguards do RES propose to ensure all contractors/suppliers and workers obey the conditions of consent ?

In the event of a breach of this procedure/safeguards what mechanisms are to be put in place in the form of actions or penalties against unapproved traffic ?

4) We would like to see a statement from RES regarding your intentions towards, and how much you plan to use, the available waterways.

Presuming there is substantial use of waterways, what contingency plan will you be proposing if this route becomes blocked or unavailable for any length of time ?

If you do not intend using the canal we will insist on a meeting with our MP, Department for the Environment, IWA, BW, CBOA, SEC, North Lincs Councillors and RES.

5) With regard to RADAR mitigation, we expect local airports and the CAA to be fully satisfied with RES proposals before the project commences. We would like RES to keep us informed of developments with regard to RADAR solutions.

6) What is the agreement between RES and Scottish Power with regard to their use of the bridge to service the Keadby power station ? We ask this on behalf of the people of Ealand.

We understand Tom Fewster has been replaced by Helen Wilson as Keadby project manager.

Is she aware of the Public Inquiry and Secretary of State conditions for this project as well as what local communities have been put through by previous RES activities ?

Is she aware she has inherited a situation of complete mistrust of RES by local communities ?
We need and we deserve clarity and surety from the forthcoming traffic management plan application.

Can the new project manager make a statement on what her position is in light of all of the above comments ?

Building Works

Loveland Builders will be on site as from Monday 10th January to start the classroom build. The new classroom will be built to the rear of the existing foundation classroom. The builders will base their work site alongside the mobile classroom and gain access via the field.

We shall endeavour to keep disruption to the life and work of the school as minimal as possible during the build however the normal entrance to school will have to be altered.

All KS1 and Foundation pupils to enter school via the foundation room.

All KS2 pupils to enter school via the front door. Children will be called into school promptly at 8.55 a.m every morning. Please try and get your child here at that time and please let the children into school first before coming into the office area as it is not a huge space. Thank you.

DYNAMIC celebrity cooking duo The Hairy Bikers roared into an Isle town to film footage for their new TV Christmas special Mums Know Best.

The Hairy Bikers' Christmas Special on BBC 2 on Sunday, 8pm.

David Myers and Simon King got together with the High Levels Women's Institute to cook up some traditional festive family food.

During their two-days of filming at Boltgate Farm, Eastoft, the bikers were treated to a traditional Christmas dinner cooked by WI member Tammy Brammals and were shown how to make Beef Skirt Pie (cow pie).
They also popped round to the house of Lucy Barker to use her traditional kitchen to learn the secret recipe of Kingy Cake.

Lucy has been with the WI for 35 years. The group used to meet in a school until it closed down, and as a temporary measure Lucy opened up the spare room in her home which was converted from a garage and they have held their meetings there ever since.
Lucy said: "They were both very down to earth – really nice gentlemen and the whole crew were delightful. They came to use my kitchen to cook a mother's recipe which has been passed onto daughters and so on.
"The Hairy Bikers made a traditional cake which dates back to the Roman times, which is made from puff pastry, frangipane filling and is eaten to mark the 12th night of Christmas and lent.

"Old recipes used to have a bean inside and if you found it you would be crowned King of the party.
"We all had a piece of the cake once it was baked and our oldest WI member was crowned Queen by the Bikers.

"Some of the members would have liked to have seen the filming but there wasn't enough room in the kitchen to watch what was happening so we're looking forward to it being broadcast on Sunday night."

AN ENERGY firm has been given the go-ahead to build a bridge across a canal to allow construction traffic access to North Lincolnshire's biggest wind farm.

The application, submitted by RES, will allow access to the northern part of the Keadby windfarm site directly from the A18 and via the new bridge.

The new bridge will span drainage ditches, the Stainforth and Keadby Canal and the railway line, on the site of the part-completed power station bridge to the east of Ealand village.

Plans received unanimous backing by members of North Lincolnshire Council planning committee on Wednesday and gave the go-ahead with a further amendment in regard to environmental issues.

Residents and campaigners are delighted with the result and await the announcement of the full transport plan.

Speaking after the meeting, John Briggs, ward member for Axholme North, who "called in" the application on the grounds of significant public interest, said: "We are absolutely delighted the application has now gone through. This is result of hard work and effort of the officers, local MPs and the community.

"We welcome the discussions with British Waterways, Network Rail and RES.

"It will provide a solution to ensure construction traffic for the wind farm doesn't go through our village or through Ealand, Eastoft, or Keadby."

The application to construct a bridge over the canal and railway line to allow access to the approved Keadby wind farm development follows on from the council's refusal to a traffic management plan last year.

Tom Fewster, RES project manager, said: "We are very pleased to have been granted planning consent for the new bridge over the canal and railway, which will allow us to access the northern part of the Keadby wind farm site directly from the A18 and via the new bridge.

"A number of organisations and individuals have provided RES with support to achieve this and we are grateful for that assistance and the consent which allows RES to move forward and draw up a new Traffic Management Plan for the construction of the wind farm."

The Traffic Management Plan, incorporating use of the new bridge, will help minimise traffic impact from the construction of the wind farm on local communities.

It will be drawn up in consultation with North Lincolnshire Council and other stakeholders and will be submitted to the council for their approval.

He added: "We have also recently been finalising arrangements for the wind farm community fund of £2.5 million, which will directly benefit local villages once the windfarm is up and running."

Save Eastoft Campaign Press Release

After seeing the RWE gloss brochure and the consultation for so-called Goole Fields 2, we are completely opposed to their scheme for another 20 turbines on Goole Fields and there are 3 good reasons why - cumulative impact, construction traffic and community health !

Cumulative Impact

At the consultation the project manager, Ceri McGrath stated “cumulative impact is a matter for the planning process to decide.”
Yet the wind farms in this area are spread over 3 planning authorities, so there is no body to decide !In the Goole Fields/Eastoft area alone there are already 28 turbines planned including the Co-op wind farm. 48 turbines 130 metres tall would truly swamp this small area.
While RWE can be unconcerned what effect they are having on us and our homes, we are not even given the chance of finding out what 28 turbines will be like before they are falling over themselves to double the size of their plot !

Around Goole, Scunthorpe and Thorne there are the two largest onshore in England planned (34 and 32 turbines at Keadby and Thorne) and 5 other wind farms operating or planned - a total of 122 turbines.
Twenty more at Goole Fields to give 36 turbines side by side would mean the three largest onshores in England - all here !!
And if that’s not enough, RWE are now trying to get a wind farm site started 1km south of Eastoft !
These are the ones that we know about . If RWE get permission for these, there will be more !
We want East Riding Planning to give a lead and send a clear signal that we have far more than our fair share - so go elsewhere!

Grid Connection

The gloss on the brochure says a site must satisfy a number of criteria and top of their list is "a local electrical grid connection".
This is wrong. A wind farm should go where it is most suitable, not where it most suits the pockets of some private gain intent on cheapest options.

The gloss at the consultation says “We cannot build wind farms just anywhere. Sites must have good wind speeds, be suitable distances from homes and have an available connection to the grid.”

RWE expect a capacity factor, how often the wind works, of 26% - the national average is 33%. Nothing special there !
There are 11 homes less than 1km from proposed site (5 homes within 500 metres!), Old Goole and Rawcliffe bridge are 1km away, Goole and Swinefleet 2km, Moorends 3km and Eastoft 4km (there were no scales on any maps presented by RWE).

Easy, cheap, grid connection should not be a presumed given nor a mandatory requirement but this is why we are being swamped - companies avoiding connection costs. RWE are in effect saying wind farms can only be built, or they will only build them, where there is grid connection, which only profits them at local expense. This also leads to the compromising of health and safety as plans are forced and made to fit a 'suitable' site !

RWE is a German owned company. In Germany planning rules mean local communities and districts can specify preferred areas for wind parks in their land use and development planning; they can define installation geometry, connections to existing infrastructure, and the appearance of the wind park, and can look forward to the expected electricity trade tax and added value that will occur in their region.

Aviation

The site must be "located in an area which will not have a detrimental impact on aviation safety".
Goole Fields wind farm will be on the northern edge of Doncaster Robin Hood Airport's turnaround space.
The report of the Public Inquiry into Keadby and Thorne Tween Bridge pointed out there is "no comparable situation in the UK where wind farms were proposed so close to the final runway approach of a major airport." (page 239)
The Civil Aviation Authority has stated "this is an issue that is of significant concern to the CAA and especially the cumulative effect of multiple wind farm developments in close proximity to one another." (letter to Crowle Town Council 8th July 2008)
All these proposed wind farms are on or near flight paths and turnarounds for Robin Hood International Airport, Sandtoft Airport, Humberside airport and the RAF/Ministry of Defence 6 airfields in Lincs, making this the most concentrated area i.e. the worst case scenario in the UK !

Water Table

What about the cumulative impact of all the massive turbine concrete bases on the local water table ? Which local authority will decide that ?

All wind farm companies intend to leave their bases in the ground forever, apart from the top one metre !

Repowerment !

We must also be aware of the latest trend for ‘repowerment’ which means turbines are being replaced as they become obsolete and companies are starting to want to redevelop existing sites, i.e. wind farms are going to last a lot longer than 25 years !

Construction Traffic
RWE's Timothy Delany says phase 2 will begin as phase 1 ends.
So instead of 13,500 HGV movements over 9 months there will be 27,000 over 18 to 20 months.
Instead of 128 abnormal (extra long,slow) loads there will be 288 (8 loads per turbine).
Not to mention the traffic for the Co-op 12 through Old Goole, Swinefleet, Crowle and Eastoft, and the 500 plus abnormal loads coming from Goole for Keadby and Thorne, and the 27,000 HGV movements on M62 for Keadby.
Either all these wind farms will be built in same congested timescale and/or we all face years and years of construction traffic !
Who decides on the cumulative impact of construction traffic ?

The project manager stated that the Environmental Impact Assessment for Goole Fields '2', which "may" include a traffic management plan, “maybe” submitted with the planning application - how can we decide without it in such a congested timescale and area ?

Worse, the traffic management plan for the 16 already passed blandly states “Delivery of construction materials will use different access routes, dependent on source of service. Traffic potentially travelling from Crowle will predominantly use the A161.”
The project manager said at the consultation they have no intention of using the A161 for HGV deliveries for phase 2. Mr Delany said HGVs would come via M62 “if possible” !
Mr Delany also said the plan is for “no deliveries from the A161 via a southern route.”
Then why isn’t this the case for the first 16 turbines ?Either all HGV movements for both phases will come through Crowle, Eastoft, Swinefleet, Goole and Old Goole (Moorends ?) or all through Goole and Old Goole !
Mr Delany thanked us for highlighting the fact that they would have to use the A161 if the route from the M62 was blocked for any period of time (accidents etc).

Seperate ?RWE are so desperate to make Goole Fields 1 and 2 appear seperate, rather than use the same access as GF 1 (via Charity Farm, so bypassing Old Goole) they have come up with a plan to send all those abnormal and normal loads through Old Goole which may even be dangerous and unworkable, never mind unsafe and unhealthy for locals. A sneaky test run through Old Goole with a 40 foot trailer is meaningless - blades are 45 metres long, overall length of vehicle 60 metres ! They are also trying to go through Moorends (a different planning authority !)

This is a contrived plan to double the size of Goole Fields wind farm without risking the possibility of a public inquiry !By keeping them seperate, if planners refuse, RWE know they can appeal to the Inspector, who tends to be business friendly !
If the turbines were all taken together they would come over the 50 megawatts level which entitles planners and local people the right to a public inquiry to have their case heard. And of course, RWE can simply join up "2" to "1" for a virtually free grid connection !
This is not two wind farms in any meaningful or practical sense save RWE's tactics !

Green ?When asked if RWE had any plans to use the railway which runs alongside site for deliveries Mr Delany said “no”.
When asked if the waterways had been considered the project manager replied “I don’t know”.
An honest answer, but all this indicates RWE (and others) are not interested in building wind farms ‘greenly’ with minimum impact on local and wider environment.
In fact the Dutch River, which runs alongside the site, and the Ouse could be used to reach Goole Fields, providing two routes which would keep all their traffic off all our roads !
We are told we must put up with wind farms for the all important green effort - why aren't wind farm companies putting up with canals for the all important green effort ?

Community Health
There can be no doubt that house prices and sales will be affected by this unprecedented concentration of wind factories and the years of construction traffic we face.There is the noise and vibration and lower road safety of years of construction traffic down unsuitable roads and lanes.
There are unresolved and deepening issues over noise and vibration from windfarms, particularly inadequate measurements ( for example no measurements made at night or for low frequency sound - inaudible but affecting the human body, particularly the inner ear).

The British Noise Abatement Society now recommend a distance of 10km from dwellings and say studies and regulations are old and out of date and further research into the multiple health and environmental effects caused by wind turbines is urgently needed.
Old Goole in particular, due to its position and proximity, will be subject to constant noise and strobe effect and shadow flicker in the afternoon Sun. Goole Fields project manager Robert Warren told us shadow flicker only occurs 900 metres from turbine blades - this is nonsense and in any case some homes are 900 metres from site.

Medical opinion is divided and undecided over wind farm syndromes and health effects. While there is dispute and increasing evidence against as wind farms come closer to communities we should be extremely careful about making decisions that could cause problems for decades.
Already we will be surrounded by wind farms when there have been no studies of what happens when there is such a concentration in one area.

The Public Inquiry recommendations and Secretary of State’s recommendations into Keadby and Thorne wind farms were insistent on ‘protecting the amenity of local villages’ - we don’t see why this shouldn’t apply to RWE schemes as well.
We urge Parish Councils to follow Swinefleet and Airmyn’s lead, stick together and oppose Goole Fields '2' on the grounds of cumulative impact of wind farms, construction traffic and local amenity (health).
We urge East Riding planning to join with North Lincs planning and say enough is enough !
We urge local people to get online and tell their Councillors the same, enough is enough !

RWE Goole Fields II Wind Farm

RWE npower renewables is investigating the potential for a wind farm on a site approximately 2km south of Old Goole, in East Riding of Yorkshire Council district.

The site boundary covers an area of approximately 4.4km2 and lies immediately to the west of the consented Goole Fields Wind Farm.

As a responsible developer, RWE npower renewables undertakes many feasibility assessments to ensure the site is suitable. We have submitted a scoping report to East Riding of Yorkshire Council which outlines the extent of the assessments we are taking at the site. These include investigations to assess local ecology, landscape, hydrology and potential noise studies.

There are many other factors that we need to consider. We will therefore consult with a wide range of people and organisations about the potential site such as The Environment Agency, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and the Ministry of Defence. We will ensure the local public are kept well informed. We are hosting events in November 2010 to meet local residents face to face. This enables us to provide information and allows us to hear, and take account of, local people’s comments.

If all of the information we have collected continues to show the site has the potential for a wind farm, we then hope to submit a planning application to East Riding of Yorkshire Council. If the council agrees the site is suitable, the wind farm could supply a large number of homes with clean, sustainable electricity.

Wind of progress for turbine plan as canal could be used to transport components

A MAJOR obstacle to plans for North Lincolnshire's biggest wind farm has been lifted.

RES has been given permission to erect 34 turbines on land near Keadby.

However, before it can start construction it must have a transport plan approved detailing how it will carry the structures to the site.

A preferred option by campaigners is to use road and water in an effort to reduce lorry journeys.

This would involve building a new bridge over a canal alongside the A18 and using the waterway for larger components.

The Commercial Boat Operators' Society was opposed to using the canal.
However, it has now revised its objections over the use of a new bridge and the waterway.

David Lowe, national secretary for the society, said: "We walked up the canal bank of the site and we think it's feasible to put in a wharf near the proposed bridge so barges can get up there.

"Most of the deliveries would come down from the river Trent.

"What we have said is we are prepared to support the bridge and access road but we are pressing that the transport plans use the canal for its deliveries."

Campaigner Steve Brown said: "The society still insists the 224 abnormal loads could easily be delivered, four times per day, via canal, but have agreed delivery of aggregates is more winnable, and important to win, to stop all those thousands of HGV exhausts."

Mr Brown said even if canal transport cost more than road, there would be grants to cover the difference.

When it becomes operational, the wind farm will generate about 80 Megawatts of electricity annually – enough to power about 38,000 homes per year.

Tom Fewster, RES project manager, said RES had listened to the feedback it received at last year's public exhibitions and worked very hard over the past year to find a solution to the issues raised.
He said: "We are pleased to have been able to put forward a solution to the Keadby wind farm access issue, which has so much support among the local community.

"A traffic-management plan has not yet been drawn up for the wind farm. We are unable to make any progress on this until we know whether or not the bridge has been given planning permission and we are now awaiting a decision by North Lincolnshire Council."

Planning officers have yet to make a decision on the plans for Pilfrey Bridge, which will span drainage ditches, the Stainforth and Keadby Canal and the railway line, on the site of the part-completed power station bridge to the east of Ealand village.

It's one down, two to go for half-marathon man Paul McCartan

FIT FOR PURPOSE: Paul McCartan has just completed the Great North Run and is set to embark on the Isle Of Axholme Half-Marathon and the Royal Parks Half-Marathon in London.

AN EASTOFT runner has already successfully completed one third of his mammoth charity bid.

Paul McCartan, 30, who works as an HR supervisor, has pledged to complete three half-marathons in four weeks.
Paul, who completed the Great North Run in a very respectable time of just over one and a half hours on Sunday, said: "It was brilliant, the atmosphere and everything.

"People dressed up in all sorts of wacky costumes, all doing the race for their own reasons, but ultimately the same reason, helping charities.

"It was wonderful speaking to people who all had very different and amazing stories, the likes of which I will never see again."

Paul is going to run two more half-marathons, first in the Isle Of Axholme on October 3 and then the Royal Parks run in London, seven days later.

The Isle Of Axholme Half-Marathon is a 13.1 mile track in which athletes and participants run on the road.

The Royal Parks Half-Marathon is on the October 10 and has a registration fee of £45 and a target sponsorship of £350.

Paul said: "It wasn't so much planned to do all three races in such a short period of time, they all just came along at once.

"Friends and family are extremely supportive and we believe that raising money for charities makes it all much more worthwhile."

Paul is running the three races for three different charities

"A friend of mine works at a nursery and a child died of meningitis in December, so I am doing it partly for that and also Jerry Green Dog Rescue is a local charity so I like to support it.

"I'm feeling excited, with a mixture of nervousness, however, I am sure it is going to be interesting.

"I have done some races before and I ran the Royal Parks last year.
"I run a few times a week, usually between five and 11 miles. I run longer distances at the weekend and make time for shorter runs during lunch breaks and in the evenings.

"The main things that inspire we while running are improving my fitness, achieving my goals and improving my running – possibly even finishing a few places quicker."

MP Meets Co-op to Discuss Wind Farm Construction

Local MP Andrew Percy met with representatives of Co-Op this week to discuss the construction of the 14 turbine wind farm at Twin Rivers. The wind farm received planning approval some years ago but construction is yet to begin.

Andrew met with Rob Ellis, Sustainable Development Manager at The Co-operative Group and James O’Leary, Public Affairs Manager for the Co-operative Group, at Westminster.

Andrew Percy MP says, "Although the planning permission for this development was gained some time ago, construction has yet to begin. In fact, construction will not start until the radar issues with Doncaster Robin Hood airport are resolved which could take many many more months.

However, following the concerns raised by residents in Swinefleet and Eastoft about the likely impact of construction traffic for the Keadby wind farm in North Lincolnshire, which are now all but resolved, I wanted to meet with the Co-Op to discuss their plans.

In particular, I wanted to find out from them what exactly they are proposing to do with the construction traffic that will be necessary for this development. As with the wind farm at Keadby, I don’t want to see local villages impacted upon by this development.

I found the attitude of Co-op to be very positive and they assured me that before construction began they would want to consult with local residents and Parish Councils. They have assured me that they will create a ‘Community Working Group’ made up of themselves, representatives of local Parish Councils, Ward Councillors and myself. This group will then consider issues such as the traffic plan and community relations etc.

It is unlikely that anything will happen on this development until 2011 at the earliest but I will be maintaining a dialogue with the Co-op from now on. I am keen to work with them to do all I can to ensure that when the construction does begin, it has as little impact on our local villages as possible.”

Couple give up the rat race to start a new life as pig farmers

AFTER packing in their city jobs in pursuit of the good life, two Eastoft farmers are happy as pigs in muck.

Ian Bishop used to work in an office job in Leeds, but now he rears rare swine with his wife Fiona.

The pair hope to bring real meat to the people of North Lincolnshire, and breed healthy, happy pigs.
Ian said: "We wanted to get out of the rat race that was West Yorkshire and get over to Lincolnshire and move into a village environment really.

"We were looking to develop a rural business and we decided rare breed pigs was a really good idea."
Ian works from home in IT and Fiona works as a school teacher to help prop up their new business, Perky Pigs.

Their passion lies in giving pigs a happy life, supplying tasty pork to customers and showing people where their food comes from.

"We're trying to keep these rare breeds going and reconnect people with their food," said Ian. "We really encourage people to come and see their pig. They can give them a good old scratch behind the ears, and we really socialise with them – they love it.

"Pigs are really bright, intelligent animals who really love the company of humans."
They are so eager to show off their happy hogs, they have set up a web cam in the pigs' pen.

"It's really bizarre, like being on Big Brother," said Ian. "We have a lot of traffic as friends and relatives log on as they have their breakfast and we're feeding the pigs.
"We just know any time we're out there someone could be watching the web cam, and that's fine as we want to be absolutely open."

The pair hope to show people there is more to meat than generic supermarket fodder.

Mangalitza pigs

"People don't realise there's so many different breeds," said Ian. "We're introducing our customers to different flavours and types of pork."

Historically, different breeds served different purposes.
Some pigs would be good for lard for cooking, and others offered delicious bacon.
Perky Pigs is focusing on rare mangalitza pigs at the moment.

The rare woolly hogs are scarce in England, but Ian and Fiona have three pedigree breeding sows.

"Customers ring all weekend and say how fantastic the meat was," said Ian. "Even if they shop at a butcher's, they've never been able to try these different types of pork."

RES Pilfrey Bridge Application PA/2010/0961

The RES bridge application appears to be what is required to leave Ealand free of abnormal loads (windfarm and Power station) but in reality the bridge is inseperable from the transport plan that will use it !

It is a little devious of RES to apply for the bridge alone and, given their track record at and since the Public Inquiry, we have every right to be apprehensive !

This application says access for construction and use will be "primarily" from the A18 - what other routes do they envisage using and how often, what with ?

Permission for the bridge ought to be conditional on the construction plan that will use it.

Only the small print of that plan will tell us RES are finally heeding the Public Inquiry and Secretary of State conditions and whether we have succeeded in protecting our villages or not !

We welcome the application to apply to build and use the bridge to cross the Keadby Wind Farm. We would like to see clarity within the traffic management plan that should accompany the planning application. The use of the A18 and the bridge should be the sole route for construction and maintenance traffic to ensure the roads through local villages are kept safe.

Special thanks to Ian Cawsey for getting the warring businesses together, it's another step in the right direction so we are pleased but cautious and do not oppose this application (subject to ecological requirements).

We will insist North Lincs Planning make this conditional on a suitable transport plan which should be submitted alongside this application.

This is the open, transparent and honest thing to do !

The bridge will be for private use only. The key uses for the bridge are:

Access over the canal and railway line for the maintenance and construction vehicles (if required) for the existing Scottish & Southern owned Keadby Power Station.

The bridge has been designed to meet the following criteria:
Provide adequate clearance over adjacent users (British Waterways, Network Rail, Environment Agency)

Ties in with existing roads/tracks both to the north and south of the main structure currently owned by Keadby Developments Ltd and National Grid

Minimise disruption to adjacent landowners both in the construction and operational phase
Have a capacity to take the expected end user traffic including oversize vehicles
and specially permitted heavy vehicles

Access for construction will primarily be from the A18 using the existing track to the south of the proposed site.

Access for users of the Bridge will also primarily be from the A18. From the A18 users will cross over the Hatfield Waste Drain via a bridge and then travel north along an existing track leading to the bridge structure.

Energy company submits bridge plans to divert wind farm traffic

CAMPAIGNERS have welcomed plans by energy company RES to build a new bridge that, if given the go-ahead, should pave the way for minimal impact on people during the construction of its Keadby wind farm site.

A planning application has been submitted to North Lincolnshire Council for the Pilfrey bridge, which will span drainage ditches, the Stainforth and Keadby Canal and the railway line, on the site of the part-completed power station bridge to the east of Ealand village.

RES Renewables plan to begin work on a 34-turbine wind farm at Keadby if planning permission for the new bridge is approved.

It would divert the traffic away from the villages and get the development back on track.

Trevor Brown, 51, of Ivydean Cottage, Main Road, Eastoft, thinks the proposed plans are much better.

He said: "It's a better idea because there is nothing on that road apart from a pub, so it makes more sense for the wind farm traffic to come that way.

"There are so many listed buildings in Eastoft and in Ealand and there are too many corners.

"I would think there will be minimal impact in Crowle, Ealand and Eastoft during the construction process."

Since North Lincolnshire Council turned down the company's traffic management plan last year, RES has been working hard to address concerns raised by the council and the local community.

Stewart Alexander, construction manager for the wind farm , said: "In the past, securing access routes across the railway and canal has been extremely problematic, but, with the backing of the local community and key politicians, we managed to overcome some difficult, but significant, hurdles at the start and found a solution which minimises impacts on the communities around Eastoft.

"We listened to the feedback we received at last year's public exhibitions and worked very hard over the past year to find a solution to the issues they raised.

"We would not have got to this stage without the valuable input and local knowledge from local politicians and councillors and we are very grateful for their assistance.

"We are also very grateful to Network Rail, British Waterways, Scottish and Southern Energy, the Environment Agency and North Lincolnshire Council, all of whom have been instrumental in helping to draw up the plans for the new bridge."

The planning application for the new bridge will now be assessed by North Lincolnshire Council.

If approved, RES' next step will be to produce a new traffic management plan for the wind farm, which will need to be signed off by North Lincolnshire Council, before construction on the wind farm could begin.

A spokeswoman for Network Rail said: "We have informed the company of the fee and they are considering that."

Mike Welton, head of planning at North Lincolnshire Council, said: "I can confirm that we have received the full planning application for Pilfrey Bridge, which will cross the canal and the railway.

"The plans say it will remain a privately owned bridge for private access during the construction of the wind farm at Keadby and Althorpe.

"Once we have checked the application and validated the plans they will appear on the North Lincolnshire Council website. It will also go out to public consultation via the parish councils where the public can have their say."

Planning Refused For RWE Anemometer

RWE's application for a anemometer at Pademoor, Eastoft has today been refused by NLC planning committee - 11 votes to 2 !

Richard Nixon made an excellent precise speech objecting on behalf of SEC and NAAW and Cllr Trevor Barker made two passionate contributions and moved rejection.

Thanks also to Cllr Johnny Briggs for his work behind the scenes and Jean Davies for ferrying me about !

RWE now have right of appeal if they choose (they didn't even turn up !!!) but judging by the vote it looks as though it has sunk in that enough is enough - hopefully this sends a clear message to the windfarm industry that we're full up !!

And well done to everyone who objected (only 23 though !!).

Appeals aside we can now live the next 3 years peacefully - apart from Goole Fields and Twin Rivers construction traffic

RWE npower renewables, the Goole Fields developer, have submitted a planning application with North Lincs Council to erect an 80 metre anemometer on land off Eastoft Moors road

(owned by local farmer and Eastoft parish councillor Richard Belton),

950 metres from the houses at Pademoor, west of the RES windfarm !

This cannot be for Goole Fields 3 miles away, in any case RWE have a mast there taking measurements since 2001.

RES originally wanted 50 turbines at Keadby, implying there is ’room’ for at least 16 more ! There has been no consultation by RWE with anyone except Richard Belton,
who is also the major land owner of the RWE Goole Fields site !

The RWE application form: Has assistance or prior advice been sought from the local authority about this application? NODesign and Access Statement: “the mast must be positioned so that an accurate wind resource across the Keadby site can be measured.”

Besides RES Keadby, the largest onshore in England, we have the second largest onshore at Tween Bridge and Goole Fields and Twin Rivers - 84 turbines already surrounding us !!

(Not to mention Flixborough, Normanby, Bagmoor, Rusholme, Laughton, Poplars Farm, North Hall Pollington, Elsham, Crow Holt, Saxby and Newland).

We are opposed to the granting of planning consent for a anemometer because we are opposed to the siting of another windfarm - we have far more than our fair share !

It’s too close to Crowle, Ealand and Eastoft. (noise, shadow flicker etc).

• It would destroy what visual amenity our villages have left !
• There are no routes there except through our villages!
• More strain on radar and air safety !
• Wind farm companies are not choosing sites carefully but for cheapest options i.e. connection to the grid.
• We are already facing years of RWE and other construction traffic without another wind farm !

Cllr Barker has ‘called in’ the application, he and Cllr Briggs will be asking RWE why they want to measure wind here.
We have until 30th May (Friday 28th?) to object.

We have the advantage of 2 campaigns already formed and the support of our MP, Conservative and Labour Councillors !

We can join forces, the NAAW and SEC.

We can nip this in the bud (before RWE can even think about how many turbines they fancy !)if enough people object now !

Many people have already objected - if you don't feel confident, just put " We have more than our fair share, enough is enough" - the important thing is to register your objection - NOW !

CONCERNS have been raised after an energy company applied for permission to erect a mast for measuring wind speed at an Isle location.

RWE npower renewables recently submitted an application to North Lincolnshire Council (NLC) for permission to erect an 80m anemometry mast.

The temporary mast would be sited for three years on land north-west of Keadby Common, south-east of Eastoft Carr.

Stephen Brown chairs the Save Eastoft Campaign which has opposed a traffic management plan put forward by Renewable Energy Systems (RES) for its proposed 34-turbine at Keadby.
The plan - to transport abnormal loads through Isle villages during construction - has twice been rejected by NLC.

Mr Brown fears another wind farm could be in the offing, following the RWE mast application. He maintains that with the proposed Keadby site - the largest onshore wind farm in England - and eight existing turbines at Flixborough, another site could saturate the area.

He said: "We have far more than our fair share and you can guess where the construction traffic will want to go."

Mr Brown also insists the RWE application is not in relation to the company's proposed wind farm site at Goole Fields.

The deadline for comments on the mast proposal was set to elapse on Tuesday but this has been extended to May 30.

Both Axholme North ward members - councillors Trevor Barker and John Briggs - have 'called the application in' and coun Briggs urged people to take advantage of the new deadline.

And Isle MP Andrew Percy is also monitoring the situation. He said: "I am very concerned as this might be a precursor for another wind farm, bearing in mind we have more than our fair share and I will be seeking clarification from the developers as to what their intentions are. There are ongoing transport issues with sites which already have planning permission (Keadby] and I can assure the villagers I will be paying particularly close attention."

Stephen Milburn, renewables developer at RWE, said: "As a company RWE npower renewables measures wind speeds at many areas across the UK and at this stage we are merely assessing the wind on this site."

To all the residents of Eastoft

RES drop Eastoft wind farm traffic plan

Obviously it's a busy time but I've received an email from Renewable Energy Systems Ltd this morning to say that a planning application to complete the road and bridge off the A18 to their wind farm site is to be lodged with the Council next week.

This is to take all the wind farm parts and construction road traffic, though a lot is now planned to go on the canal.

The plan is also for a permanent bridge over the railway so it will be there for future maintenance or other needs.

As a result Renewable Energy Systems Ltd have dropped plans to route traffic through Eastoft, saying that even if this plan was rejected (and we don't expect that to be the case) they could use the canal for all but the turbine parts which would not go through the village.

I want everything to go over the bridge as that would be good for everyone and I am confident that we can make this happen.

So good news that I wanted to share with you as quickly as possible - now it's back to the campaigning!

Wind Farm Plans Airport Safety Fears

A PROTEST group has raised concerns that a windfarm planned for an Isle village could endanger air safety at Robin Hood Airport.

Stephen Brown chairs the Save Eastoft Campaign which opposes a number of measures put forward by Renewable Energy Systems Limited (RES) which was granted permission to build a 34-turbine site near Keadby.

Planning permission was only granted following a lengthy public inquiry and after a number of conditions were attached by the Secretary of State.

Twice RES has had a Traffic Management Plan (TMP) rejected for transporting abnormal loads and campaigners also objected to planners allowing the installation of eight temporary monitoring masts close to the proposed site.

Now fears over aviation safety have caused Mr Brown to act again.
He has written to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to highlight the eight existing turbines at nearby Flixborough and many more at proposed windfarms around North Lincolnshire, including the Keadby site.

He said: "All of these are on or near flight paths for Robin Hood, Sandtoft Airfield, Humberside Airport and the RAF/Ministry of Defence airfields in Lincolnshire - making this the worst case scenario in the UK."

Mr Brown, who lives on Eastoft High Street, has repeatedly stressed the group is not against the building of windfarms but wants to ensure such sites are built safely.
And he wants to see an adequate radar safety solution in place to protect air traffic around Robin Hood Airport.

"RES are up to their old tricks, trying to ignore the conditions of the planners and we have had to form a campaign to make sure it gets built properly," he added.

RES project manager Tom Fewster said the company had been working with the CAA, North Lincolnshire Council and Robin Hood Airport for the last 18 months to develop a solution for any potential issues relating to the proposed windfarm.

"This is an issue that we take very seriously," he added. "The planning consents for both Keadby windfarm and Tween Bridge windfarm state that no wind turbines can operate at either site until a mitigation solution has been formally agreed with Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield against any possible impact the wind turbines might have on their radar.

"This planning condition must be signed off by North Lincolnshire Council before work on the windfarms can progress.

"The solution being proposed for Robin Hood Airport is a patch solution, as has been successfully implemented by NATS Services Ltd at the Whitelee windfarm south of Glasgow to mitigate similar issues for Glasgow Airport."

Robin Hood Airport spokesman Robin Tudor said: "The airport continues to work closely with the wind farm developer, who is developing additional radar equipment that will mitigate the impact of the wind turbines on the existing radar and permit airport operations without compromising safety.
"This is expected to become operational in autumn 2011."

Roundtable Update from Ian Cawsey MP 11/02/10

The leaflet (North Isle News) does indeed refer to the meeting I have told you of previously. I chaired this meeting and the attendees represented

North Lincolnshire Council,
RES, British Waterways,
the Environment Agency,
Network Rail & Scottish & Southern Electric (SSE)

Who had local managers present and senior national management via conference call.

As I explained previously, the big positive was that no one opposed using the SSE road for everything which is the best outcome I am sure. SSE were positive and Network Rail explained that whilst they had no in principle objection there is a bit of a bureaucracy to go through.

They also said they were relaxed about this being a permanent crossing (those with good memories will recall that SSE only wanted a temporary crossing when they were going to build an extension to the power station). This is important because there will be ongoing maintenance at the wind farm and the power station.

Since the meeting SSE and RES have come to an agreement to pursue this and an application has now been lodged with Network Rail. They have now acknowledged receipt and cashed the application cheque so it is in the clearance stage as well as obviously negotiating a price for the access. Network Rail said this process will take some weeks so we are awaiting that.

Of course if all of this is as successful as we hope then we will all get the route the Minister wanted to be used when approval was granted. But as soon as I have further information as to progress I will be in touch and I hope it will be the news we all wish for.

Letter From Andrew Percy

As you may have seen from my local leaflets, both Cllr John Briggs and I have been continuing to work hard to help support the efforts to find a solution to the wind farm traffic issue which has caused a great deal of concern locally.

This week I have received some encouraging news from both Network Rail and the wind farm developers RES Ltd, both of whom I have met with on a number of occasions. I thought you might like to hear it.

It looks as though progress is now being made with Network Rail writing to me to confirm that they have now started their clearance process in relation to completing the SSE bridge to allow access off the A 18 over their track.

They tell me that this process should take 6 weeks in which time they will decide whether to approve or reject the proposal.

I've also held a number of meetings and conversations with RES Ltd who have also been in touch this week to update me on progress. This is what they had to tell me -

"The solutions currently being developed are;

Delivery by barge and via the A19 and Vazon bridge.
Delivery via a temporary or permanent bridge at the site of the part constructed SSE bridge.

Engineering solutions have been discussed and accepted in principle by all key stakeholders, however, it remains to negotiate a lease or wayleave deal with the key stakeholder organisations as landowners so that RES has the land rights to implement the solution."

They go on to tell me that so long as these legal agreements can be concluded successfully, they are confident that, "either all, or almost all, construction traffic would avoid Keadby and Ealand, while no construction traffic would go through Eastoft."

This is obviously encouraging but it is important to remember that there is still quite a lot of work to be completed before these solutions can be implemented. Legal agreements can take some time to implement and so I shall be continuing to keep the pressure up on all those involved.

Whilst it looks as though Luddington and Eastoft could be guaranteed no construction traffic, I still need more detail from them regarding Ealand.

This should become available, if and when, agreement is reached.

Eastoft Gains Outstanding Ofsted Grades

GOVERNMENT inspectors have applauded an Isle school which gives pupils a "flying start" to their education.

Ofsted paid a recent visit to Eastoft C of E Primary School and was quick to praise the "strong, caring ethos" provided for all 48 pupils who themselves were lauded for their excellent behaviour.

A subsequent report rated the school's overall effectiveness as a grade two – good – and this mark was repeated across a range of different educational criteria.

Indeed the highest grade one – outstanding – was awarded for the extent of pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development as well as for the effective way the school engaged with parents and carers.

This was shown in the official Ofsted questionnaire where 86 per cent of respondents declared they were happy with their child's experience in the classroom.

But it was in the Early Years Foundation Stage where the school really shone and outstanding grades were recorded across all categories.

Inspectors concluded children got off to the best possible start at nursery level, growing in confidence and making very rapid progress.

The report highlighted stimulating learning activities, both indoors and outside, and it declared pupils got off to a "flying start" and developed a "real thirst for learning".

Special mention was also given to strong links developed with the village's St Bartholomew's Church as well as those established with children in Jamaica and China.

Inspectors did recommend staff help pupils apply mathematical skills throughout all subjects and that a monitoring system be consistently applied to help them improve their work.

Overall, though, it was a glowing report which recognised that pupils' achievements continued to improve at all levels and it also highlighted the "strong leadership and clear, shared vision" of headteacher Angela Hewson and her staff.

Mrs Hewson wished to thank all pupils, staff, parents, governors and stakeholders for their hard work and dedication in working together to achieve success at the school.

She added: "We have not only been judged good which my school self-evaluation systems acknowledge but have achieved outstanding grading in four different areas.

I am very proud of the school family in achieving this outcome and very proud of our Ofsted report."

Cricketers Take on South Africans

TWO young cricketers enjoyed the opportunity of a lifetime when they represented their county in a two-week tour of South Africa.

Alex Fletcher (16) and Oliver Coleman (15) were selected for the Lincolnshire County under-15 squad which recently returned from the country - winning no less than five games in their six match schedule.

Both are members of the Outcasts Cricket Club, based at Hirst Priory, near Ealand, and the two teenagers also represent North Axholme School in the sport.

The tour also encompassed Christmas lunch at the Newlands Stadium in Cape Town where England recently contested the third test of their own South African tour.

Alex, of Commonside, Crowle, made the 13-man county squad after impressing with his swing and seam bowling.

He said: "I thought it was a brilliant experience. I really enjoyed it, particulary the day/night game we played, that was the highlight of the trip. I think it has helped improve me and make me a better player to have played in a different country.

"There were two sides to the country though as you saw shacks where people lived and there was one ground which was treated with sewage."

Alex's mum, Yvonne, added: "They had an absolutely brilliant time. They played very, very well as a team and gelled together, it was a wonderful experience for them.

"Playing in shanty towns and then grounds complete with swimming pools meant they got to see different cultures - at the shanty town ground they didn't even have any bails so they appreciate what they have here at home."

Oliver, of Yorkshireside, Eastoft, made the tour after impressing with his batting performances.

He said: "I loved South Africa and although I didn't bat very well I enjoyed all the places we went to. We made friends and it was an experience to play on different tracks and get a good variety of cricket.

"It's a once in a lifetime experience and although I didn't have family out there with me I enjoyed being with the team."

Keadby Canal - Vazon Bridge

On an outing with Daniel, by train to Cleethorpes, we passed over the Vazon Bridge on the Keadby Canal. When we got home, I decided to do a bit of research on the bridge.

In an anoraky way, it's quite fascinating.

The Vazon Bridge is a sliding bridge. When activated, the whole deck of the bridge carrying the two railway lines slides out of the way, clearing the way for the boats to pass through.

It takes around two minutes from first movement of the bridge to clear the canal, allow a boat to pass and return the tracks back to their rightful place, although that cleary depends on how many boats are passing.

The actual cycle time is much longer than that, presumably allowing for the motors to spin up etc. The (annoying but necessary) siren runs for nearly five minutes.

The Pennine Waterways website has some information on the bridge as it was in 2003.

Since then, it would appear that the bridge has been replaced by a similar one which would account for the shiny paint when we visited.

There are (obviously) these pictures of the bridge and surrounding area, and I've also got a two minute video showing the bridge opening and closing. Unfortunately, it isn't the best video I've ever done and in hindsight, it's taken from the wrong side, but it's Moving Pictures.

Campaigners Attack Wind Farm Company

A COMPANY set to build a controversial 34-turbine wind farm in Keadby has been slammed by a protest group following the granting of another planning application.

Renewable Energy Systems (RES) was given the green light by North Lincolnshire Council (NLC) to erect ten 80m high anemometer/meteorological masts on land north and south of an access road to Pilfrey Farm and Keadby Grange.

Permission was granted earlier this month for the temporary masts at the proposed site although there were a number of conditions attached.
This includes the masts being removed within 12 months of the first one being erected.

Another key condition concerns a Traffic Management Plan (TMP) which has already been rejected twice by the council.

At the 2008 public inquiry into the proposed windfarm the Secretary of State imposed a number of conditions before the site could be built - and the masts cannot be erected until the Traffic Management Plan has been approved by North Lincolnshire Council.

Only the approved route shall be used to transfer masts to and from the site, planning conditions stipulate.

Previously hundreds of residents had protested at the route proposed by Renewable Energy Systems which would have seen abnormal loads travelling through Ealand and Eastoft.

Steve Brown of the Save Eastoft Campaign said he was against Renewable Energy Systems being granted any kind of planning permission - regardless of attached conditions - until a Traffic Management Plan was agreed with access for all vehicles and routes properly risk-assessed.

"Just to be clear, we do not oppose the windfarm and the masts, we have had to form a campaign just to make sure the windfarm gets built properly," he added.

"Given that we've had a public inquiry where Renewable Energy Systems claimed they had access sorted in order to acquire planning consent when clearly this was never the case.

"Now they want permission to build when they still have only the villages to access their site.

"The bottom line is we do not trust this company and we are at the sharp end if this company did turn out to be unreliable and lacking in duty of care."

Renewable Energy Systems project manager Tom Fewster explained the monitoring masts will help turbines generate as much electricity as possible.

He added: "We will not begin construction of the wind farm, and therefore we won't be installing the new monitoring masts, until we have agreed a Traffic Management Plan with the council, which we are working hard on and expect to complete over the next few months.

"Once the wind farm is fully up and running, the masts will be taken down again."

Well ! What a way to make a decision !!

S Brown spoke against on (Wed 9th) NLC Planning Committee;

Councillor Briggs
("I do not trust the way they are going about it")

Councillor Barker
("I can't see any reason why they're doing this now, I expect them to withdraw the application and be more aware they've upset a lot of people.") also spoke very firmly against.

Permission was granted by one vote !

The first vote was 7-6, the second vote was 6-5 ! (I think, it was very confused !!)

Confused ?

The vote was taken twice because one Councillor complained that two other Councillors had left and returned during the motion so shouldn't vote as they couldn't be fully informed !!

One planning Councillor left completely just before the RES motion after sitting through 2 hours of minor applications !

Two or three Councillors asked questions about the application.

One Councillor showed his firm grasp of the RES affair by simply stating "there's a lot of smoke and mirrors here, whichever way the traffic goes there'll be objections."

(Guess which way he voted !)

No Councillor made any sincere, consistent attempt to argue for permission - yet it was passed !!

The RES representative describing the restriction as "appropriate" !

(Mr Alexander also stated in Council Chambers that "it would be many months before the masts get delivered to site").

This is an outrageous / ridiculous way to decide a serious (health and safety anyone ?) planning issue !

Now, we have to sit here for 6 to 12 months and trust RES !

After all RES have done and demonstrated !

It just didn't need to be passed now !

Now, we will have to monitor the site as we drive past - another risk !!

Eastoft Parish Council Registered No Objections ?

Eastoft Parish Council have an absolutely overwhelming mandate from the people of Eastoft to protect us from RES.

They have a duty of care and they signed up to the North Axholme Against Windfarms Charter two years ago .

The Scout Moor Wind Farm Project has been Photographed in its construction phases.
This Wind Farm is smaller than the proposed Keadby Windfarm .

Have a look at this Construction Site.

Each Turbine has three Blades and sits on a assembled tower of three parts and the generator nacelle on top.

This equates to 3 Blades + 3 Tower Section + 1 Nacclle = 7 Abormal Loads

7 Abnormal Loads + 34 Turbines = 238 Abnormal loads excluding the Cranes involved

Most of these Loads will be going through Ealand

Endangering Parents and Children of The Secret Garden Nursery as they come and go there daily business.

Commuters will not have access to the Crowle Railway station as it access will be cut.

Ealand is facing a bleak future at the hands of Power Company's and Renewable Energy Systems

Have a good look on how the turbines pass through villages and how every body has been cleared away by the Police.

Renewable Energy Systems (RES) has applied to North Lincolnshire Council for permission to erect ten 80m high anemometer/meteorological masts on land north and south of an access road to Pilfrey Farm and Keadby Grange.

The company has already been given the go-ahead to build a 34-wind turbine development at Keadby but it has twice had a Traffic Management Plan (TMP) rejected by the council.

This follows massive opposition from residents concerned about the transportation of abnormal loads through their villages to the proposed site.

Many residents have now objected to the company's mast application and Sarah Crow, of Washinghall Lane, Eastoft, slammed its "ambiguous wording".

She said: "From a traffic perspective I don't think the village can take any more. We don't want any more, especially down our lane as it's very busy with pedestrian traffic, horses and children.

"Because the TMP is in tatters there is no plan to adhere to and I hope they don't bring this in through the back door."

Steve Brown of the Save Eastoft Campaign is worried the proposed site of the masts is in a flood risk area.

"I am also very concerned about what may transpire if this company gets any kind of planning consent before proper access is agreed," he added.

Keadby and Althorpe Parish Council also oppose the proposed masts.

Chairman Arthur Wills said: "We don't oppose renewable energy but the Isle is being saturated with wind farms."

RES project manager Tom Fewster explained the company hopes to install the temporary masts during the construction and turbine installation process, alongside the wind farm's enabling works.

He added: "The masts are used for calibration and performance monitoring of the turbines during commissioning and will be removed after commissioning.

"The route the masts will be delivered to site will be the same route which will be used for the construction of the wind farm. The traffic management plan for the wind farm, which defines construction material and turbine delivery routes, is currently being developed by RES, in consultation with stakeholders to minimise the impact upon local communities and to avoid those communities completely, so far as is possible."

A decision is expected to be made by the planning committee on December 9.
